NHL Prospects: Helge Grans

Helge Grans is a Swedish defenceman drafted by the LA Kings in the second round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Grans stands at 6'3'' and weighs 205 pounds.

Like many Swedish-born defencemen, Grans' best attribute is his skating. Helge is a smooth skater and uses his edges well. He plays an offensive-minded game having elaborate puck-handling skills and a powerful yet accurate shot. The next step from scouts is for Grans' to work on his decision-making and defensive play. These attributes should come over time, especially with his size and skating.

The Swede played for Malmo Redhawks of the SHL during the 2020-2021 season. He compiled 24 points in 56 games; as a 19-year-old.

Grans' transitioned to North America, playing for the Ontario Reign (this season). He played in 56 games and scored 24 points, including seven goals. Grans' also suited up for Team Sweden's World Juniors Team (before the cancellation of the tournament). In two games, he scored three points quarterbacking the top power-play unit.

Grans is only one level away from playing in the National Hockey League. The d-man has showed elite offensive talent, playing with older competition. Will he be able to adapt to the NHL game? Will he improve his defensive game?
