2022 OHL Cup Preview

The annual OHL Cup, powered by the GTHL, will begin in four days. What exactly is the OHL Cup? A showcase of the most talented U-16 (born in 2006) hockey teams in Ontario, as well as one club from the United States.

Twenty teams will compete for the title of OHL Cup Champions, as well as the opportunity to lift the most prestigious minor-hockey trophy.

The top four teams from the GTHL, OMHA, and Alliance are automatically entered into the tournament (meaning they advanced to the semi-finals of their respective leagues). While one team from the United States, HNO and NOHA are also automatically entered.

To qualify for the tournament, ten more top-ranked teams must compete in a wild-card game. The wild-card games, which are win-or-go, will begin on March 29th. The opponents have yet to be determined.

All games will take place at Scotiabank Pond in Toronto, with the championship game taking place at Ryerson University's Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The London Jr. Knights, Brantford 99ers, Huron-Perth Lakers, and Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs (Alliance) have already punched their tickets to the OHL Cup.

Ryan Roobroeck and Ethan Weir, both underage players, stand out for the 2006 London Jr. Knights. Both players were expected to apply for exceptional status and, if granted, they’d enter the OHL draft as underage players.

Roobroeck and Weir began the season with the 2006 London Jr. Knights after previously playing for the 2007 Knights. Roobroeck has 63 points in 27 games, while Weir has 36 points in 27 games.

Brantford calmly defeated The Lambton Jr. Sting to advance to the semi-finals. They are currently the eighth-ranked U16 team in Ontario.

The Huron-Perth Lakers are on a high after defeating the Waterloo Wolves and advancing to the semi-finals. Cole Lewis, their leading scorer, has 15 goals and 14 assists in 37 games.

The Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs are the final Alliance automatics. Elgin finished fifth in the league and advanced by defeating the fourth-place Windsor Jr. Spitfires. They are currently ranked 15th in Ontario, with a record of 29-13-1.

The GTHL, otherly known as the Greater Toronto Hockey League recently concluded the first-round of their players. The following teams have booked their tickets to the OHL Cup: Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Don Mills Flyers, Toronto Marlboros, and Markham Majors.

The Toronto Jr. Canadiens finished the season in third place after leading the GTHL for the majority of the season. The Whitby Silver Stick winners are Ontario's second-ranked U16 team.

Michael Hage, the team's star player, was even called up to play in the OJHL (junior hockey) and scored two goals and two assists in one game.

The Don Mills Flyers finished seventh in the regular season and were not expected to make it past the first round. To qualify, they faced off against the Mississauga Senators and defeated the second-place Sens.

The Markham Majors and the Toronto Marlies have also qualified for the OHL Cup. They both advanced after defeating the North York Rangers and the Vaughan Kings.

The qualified teams for the OMHA, HNO, NOHA , and USA have yet to be announced. This announcement should be made by Monday.

What’s one team to expect in the wild-card games? I believe the #1 ranked (in Ontario) Mississauga Senators will be chosen. The Sens, led by two 07s, William Moore and Michael Misa, was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the Red Wings, Marlies, and Flyers.

The last OHL Cup was won by the Don Mills Flyers. They were lead by: Shane Wright, Brandt Clarke, Brennan Othmann.

UPDATE! The following teams will compete at the OHL Cup: York Simcoe Express, Quinte Red Devils, Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs, Niagara North Stars, Northern Ontario Hockey Association, TPH Hockey,
