MLB Game Recap: Red Sox at Athletics (6/4/22)

The Boston Red Sox head into game two of a three-game set after taking game one 7-2. Both teams came into the game with losing records, hoping to gain some momentum to make a playoff push. The visiting Red Sox sends Canadian Nick Pivetta to the pound, while Oakland sends Paul Blackburn.

Batting

Trevor Story led off the third inning with a double to deep left field, followed by a walk to Franchy Cordero. Ninth hitter Christan Vazquez drove in Story by hitting a double to left field. Later in the inning superstar, Rafael Devers singled to centerfield, driving in Cordero and Vazquez. The Red Sox took a 3-0 after three innings.

In the following inning, Alex Verdugo would drive in Xander Bogaerts to give the BoSox a 4-0 lead.

The Red Sox would explode during the eighth inning, driving four more runs to make the game 8-0. Verdugo singled to drive in J.D. Martinez, Story doubled to drive in Bogaerts, while Cordero singled driving in Verdugo.

The A's were held scoreless throughout the game, only generating four hits. Ramon Laureano put up the best offensive tallies for Oakland, hitting a double and single.

Pitching

A's starter Paul Blackburn had a rough outing after coming into the game with a 2.15 ERA and a 5-1 record. He allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings of work. Oakland relievers Lou Trivino, A.J. Puk, Sam Selman, and Parker Markel posted shutout relief appearances. While newly acquired bullpen arm Domingo Tapia struggled, allowing four runs and six hits in 1/3 innings.

Boston's Nick Pivetta continued to put up quality starts. Today he went seven innings, allowing two hits and zero runs. He struck out seven and only walked two. Pivetta finished the day with a pitch count of 100 before handing the ball over to relievers Tanner Houck and Hirokazu Sawamura, who both pitched one scoreless inning.

Boston takes game two of a three game set, Oakland looks to rebound during game three tomorrow. Boston is scheduled to send Rich Hill, while Oakland will send Frankie Montas to the mound.
