Winners and Losers of the 2022 Trade Deadline

The NHL Trade Deadline has come to an end, teams will roll with their current squads into the playoffs, or the offseason for others. Here is our winners and losers from the past NHL Event

Winner: Florida Panthers

The Panthers arguably acquired the biggest trade target at the deadline. They acquired former Flyers captain Claude Giroux. The Panthers would send Owen Tippett, a 2024 first-round pick and a 2023 third-round pick and get a few roster players in return (including Giroux).

Tippett has been struggling with the Panthers, since being drafted 10th overall by the team and the 2024 first-round pick is bound to be a late one.

They also acquired depth defender Robert Hagg from the Buffalo Sabres for a sixth-round pick. Then, former first-overall pick Aaron Ekblad was placed on LTIR with a season-ending injury.

The Panthers are currently first in the Atlantic and are only getting stronger. They are definitely Stanley Cup contenders.

Loser: Washington Capitals

During the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline, the Capitals made no visible gains while acquiring forwards Marcus Johansson and Johan Larsson. The Caps traded away speedster Daniel Sprong and picks.

The Caps are currently fourth in the Metro and clinging onto the final wild-card position. The Caps will have a hard time beating out superior teams such as the Rangers, Penguins, and Hurricanes. After, they each acquired Andrew Copp (Rangers), Rickard Rakell (Penguins), and Max Domi (Hurricanes).

The Capitals aren’t getting any younger. This is one of their last seasons contending for Lord Stanley due to the ageing of core players Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

Furthermore, the Caps have one of the weakest prospect pools in the entire NHL.

Winner: Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks' front office was busy this past week moving long-time vets Hampus Lindholm, Rickard Rakell, and Josh Manson, to name a few. In return, the Ducks brought in valuable picks and prospects.

Lindholm, Rakell, and Manson were all on expiring contracts and would have had the decision to not re-sign with the Ducks. Urho Vaakanainen, Calle Clang, and Drew Helleson were among the prospects coming over to the Ducks organisation. The Ducks also have three first-round picks in the next two NHL Drafts. The Ducks have made some valuable moves that will benefit the club in the future. The team already has Jamie Drysdale (19) and Trevor Zegras (20) playing in the NHL.

Loser: Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers have chosen to not fix their biggest gap in their lineup, goaltending. Oilers fans watched in terror as goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was traded for only a conditional second-round pick.

Other depth goaltenders moved at the deadline included Andrew Hammond, Alexei Melnichuk, and Kaapo Kähkönen.

The Oilers did acquire Brett Kulak and Derick Brassard, but left the day without their number one need. Will Mikko Koskinen hold the fort for the Oilers?
