The Boston Bruins acquired forward Casey Mittelstadt as part of the Charlie Coyle trade that sent the Weymouth, Massachusetts native to the Colorado Avalanche. Along with Mittelstadt, the Bruins also received prospect Will Zellers and a draft pick in the deal.
Mittelstadt spent parts of two seasons in Denver before making the move back to the East Coast. Once a highly touted prospect (8th overall in 2017), he struggled to establish consistency in a top-six role with Colorado, often showing flashes of skill but failing to maintain offensive production.
The Minnesota native started the 2024–25 campaign strong, notching seven goals and 11 assists in his first 23 games. During that stretch, he averaged 19:18 of ice time per night and recorded 46 shots on goal. However, over the next 39 games, his production dipped significantly—he tallied just 16 points and was eventually demoted to the second power-play unit.
After being dealt to Boston, Mittelstadt’s struggles continued—though it’s worth noting the Bruins themselves stumbled down the stretch after becoming sellers at the trade deadline. In 19 games with Boston, the Edina native posted just four goals and two assists.
While Mittelstadt’s inconsistency was evident during his time in Colorado, some of his drop-off in Boston could be attributed to the team’s roster situation. In Colorado, he often centered high-end talent like Valeri Nichushkin, Mikko Rantanen, and Artturi Lehkonen. In contrast, during his short stint with the Bruins, he was paired with bottom-six caliber forwards such as Vinni Lettieri, Cole Koepke, and Marat Khusnutdinov—a clear downgrade in linemates.
Looking ahead to the 2025–26 season, Mittelstadt is projected to slot into Boston’s second line, flanking centerman Pavel Zacha alongside speedster Viktor Arvidsson. With more stability and higher-end talent around him, there’s hope Mittelstadt can bounce back and rediscover the playmaking touch that once made him a top-10 pick. An offensive playmaking middle-six forward, the B's are so desperately missing in their lineup.
