Patrice Bergeron Is the Definition of a "Team Player"

What's a team player? It's Patrice Bergeron, one of the most loyal players to ever suit up for the black and gold. Bergeron was selected 45th overall by the Boston Bruins during the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

The Quebec native, Bergeron, has proven to be a true leader on and off the ice. Bergeron stars on the ice as the Bruins' first-line centermen. He has played in over 1200+ games with the club, while sitting fourth in team history with 982 points and fourth in total career assists and goals.

Off the ice, Patrice is a true leader. Bergeron was named the 20th team captain in Bruins history. But, since signing his most recent contract, we've seen the real Bergeron.

The Quebec native, isn't playing hockey for the money. He wants to win in Boston. The Bruins and Bergeron recently announced a one-year contract extension for the forward. Bergeron's contract includes a $2.5M base cap hit, along with $2.5M in potential bonuses (if he were to play at least ten games this season).

The reigning Selke Trophy winner (awarded to the best defensive forward), made it clear last season that he wouldn't sign with another team. It was either an extension the Bruins or retire. Bergeron released a statement after signing that he was happy once again to join the Bruins. "Boston is my home", said Bergeron.

Keep in mind players like Nick Ritchie, Paul Byron, and Pius Suter all have a cap hit higher or equal to Bergeron. Let's be real: the Selke Trophy winner is miles better than the names listed.

The Bruins captain, in fact, did the team a favour. Bergeron released a statement saying he wanted to play around great players. He basically took a pay cut in order for the Bruins to bring in "good players". For example, David Krejci and Pavel Zacha.

Let's also not forget about the numerous off-ice activities Patrice does for the city of Boston. Patrice created the Patrice's Pals program, creating experiences for young children in the Boston area.

Bergeron's contract shows the centermen is a true team player.
