NHL Updates: Can Caufield Hit 50 Goals? Makar Dazzles Again + Elmer Soderblom to Debut (MTL, COL, DET)


The NHL season is underway! After the conclusion of the first day of the National Hockey League season, here are some of the top updates for around the league:

Can Cole Caufield Hit 50 Goals?

Cole Caufield was arguably the best player on the ice for the Montreal Canadiens, during their opening night victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Caufield tallied two goals, playing 18:18, along with five shots on goal.

Firstly, the youngster got on the board early in the second period. Approximately, 33 seconds in Caufield joined teammate Nick Suzuki on a two-on-one. Suzuki threaded the needle to Caufield, who roofed the puck by the goaltender. Caufield's goal tied the game at one a piece.

Secondly, Caufield's second goal came at the near end of the second period, when he straight out beat Leafs' goaltender Matt Murray. Caufield entered the offensive zone with full composure of the puck and roofed a wrist shot, above the glove of Murray.


To sum up, there is definitely a good chance of the youngster hitting the 50 goal mark, especially after all the success he found last year, after the guidance from Martin St. Louis.

Makar Dazzles Again

Cale Makar was once again spectacular yesterday night, as his Avalanche team dismantled the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-2.

Makar figured in on two of the Avalanche goals, recording assists on the Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichushkin goals. Furthermore, the defensemen was all over the ice playing over 28 minutes, recording four shots on net and one block.

Additionally, the most impressive part of Makar's game is his skating and confidence. The Calgary native, displayed why he is the reigning Norris Trophy winner. When the d-man casually walked by Chicago defenders on the breakout, and also breaking ankles while walking the point.


Makar enters his fifth season in the National Hockey League, and is currently the favourite once again to capture the Norris Trophy, for best defensemen.

Elmer Soderblom to Debut

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that rookie, Elmer Soderblom will debut Friday against the Montreal Canadiens, while Filip Zadina and Pius Suter sit out.

The massive Swede was one of the most impressive players throughout training camp and preseason, as the forward beat out many veterans for a spot on the team. Soderblom is just 21-years-old, and spent the past season in the SHL.


Soderblom plays a dynamic power forward type game, with his size and athleticism. The Gothenburg native, stands at 6-foot-6-inches and weighs in at 220 pounds.

For many Detroit fans, this is a potential turning point within the organization. The team looks to welcome in young talent, after previous seasons of dissatisfaction.
