NHL Waivers: Bruins, Avalanche, Kraken, Maple Leafs (10/09/22)

As we continue to progress closer to the start of the NHL season, teams have cut down their lineups. Furthermore, in some cases, in order to demote a player to the minor leagues, the player has to be placed on waivers. Here are some of the top players that have been placed on waivers today:

Boston Bruins - Chris Wagner, Nick Foligno, Mike Reilly

The Bruins have now announced their full-roster for the start of the 2022-23 season. The Bruins opted to cut both forwards Nick Foligno and Chris Wagner, as they go for a younger approach to start the year.

Nick Foligno was described as a disappointment last season, after the Bruins signed him to an AAV of $3.8M. The former captain of the Columbus suited up for 64 games last season, playing in a minimal role on the fourth line.

Furthermore, Chris Wagner spent the entire last season playing for the Providence Bruins of the AHL. Last season, the Bruins opted to bury the wingers salary, as he failed to impress during training camp.

Lastly, Mike Reilly was a surprise for many Bruins fans, as the defensemen had a very solid preseason, and showed improvements during training camp. With the demotion of Reilly, it is extremely likely that the Bruins would sign Anton Stralman, who is currently listed on a PTO.

If all players go unclaimed on waivers, they would all report to the Providence Bruins training camp. With the series of moves Boston would have just over then $1,900,000 in cap space.

Colorado Avalanche - Anton Blidh, Mikhail Maltsev

The defending Stanley Cup champions have finalized their roster to start the upcoming season. The Avs have finalized their 23-man roster after placing Anton Blidh and Mikhail Maltsev on waivers.

Although both players are extremely likely to be called back up (if not claimed off waivers), the Avs chose for a more dynamic offensive approach.

Anton Blidh came over during free agency, when he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the team. Blidh was a member of the Boston Bruins last season, where he played a fourth-line role in the NHL. Blidh played in 32 NHL games last season and is well-known for throwing hits, and playing a role on the PK.

Mikhail Maltsev was a member of the 2021-22 Avalanche team. Maltsev split time in the NHL and AHL, last season. Maltsev's past season numbers are highlighted by an impressive AHL season, but an underwhelming stint in the NHL. Maltsev was unable to record a point in 18 games.

It is extremely unlikely that either play gets claimed, so they will likely report to the Colorado Eagles training camp.

Seattle Kraken - Michal Kempny, John Hayden

The Kraken enter their second season in the National Hockey League, with an extremely young, and talented group. Both Matty Beniers and Shane Wright have officially made the roster, after the team played both Michal Kempny and John Hayden on waivers.

For Kempny it looks as if the younger, William Borgen has beat him out for the final defensive spot on the roster. This offseason the Kraken acquired Kempny during free agency, after GM Ron Francis signed him to a one-year, league minimum contract.

Kempny split last season playing between Hershey of the AHL and Washington in the NHL. Kempny has significantly fellen off his career path, since the days where he was listed as a top-four defensemen during the 2017-18 season.

John Hayden is another player that was signed through free agency by the Seattle Kraken. The 27-year-old forward spent the entire past season with the Buffalo Sabres. Hayden has played in 240 career NHL games, recording 35 points.

Toronto Maple Leafs - Kyle Clifford, Wayne Simmonds, Victor Mete, Adam Gaudette

It's official the likes of Denis Malgin and Zach Aston-Reese have made the Maple Leafs roster. The Leafs were blessed this preseason, with the amount of depth shown, resulting in the demotion of veteran presences.

Both Kyle Clifford and Wayne Simmonds were key parts within the Leafs' bottom-nine last season. As the two combined for over 120 penalty minutes last season playing in a combined total of 95 games.

For Mete and Gaudette, they were simply beat up by other talent within the organization. After, the re-signing of Rasmus Sandin, it was pretty clear that Mete would not earn himself a roster spot. While for Gaudette, he put up a solid stint of games, but falling short of the last spot to Denis Malgin.

For the four Maple Leafs placed on waivers, don't be surprised if a team were to claim one of these players, as they were all capable players last season.
